Schwoben Civil War Empty Part 1

Civil War
2nd January 2020 - Northern Voltal

0800 hours

A tall but well built, soldier stands guard in the trench, watching the Northern Soldiers who were just 200 metres away. A cigar in his mouth and his gun slung over his shoulder. He was in freshly washed, camouflaged uniform that was most likely to be covered in mud very quickly.

"Today is the day Oskar. How are you feeling about this? " another soldier said to him
"I'm feeling as good as I can about war. We are going defeat the enemy and go home, just like we've always done before"

The day the enemy were rumored to attack. It was early morning and everyone in the trench was making sure their gun was loaded and they were ready for what was to come. Their radio was set up and they were all listening. Waiting for the northern declaration of war to be announced from military command. This section of the trenches were the weakest point for the enemy. And the point where the south plans to strike, with enemy tanks extremely thin in this area.

The trench systems went on for miles along the Northern border, the Southern government had expected a war was coming ever since the north broke away from the federation. The trenches were dug and built by the soldiers to defend themselves, the trenches were however cheaply constructed for the Southern military command had strong counterattack plans prepared. 5 professional divisions and 8 reserve divisions would hold the front against the north while the other 4 professional divisions attempt to punch a hole in their lines. The south were outnumbered but had the advantage of skill on their side.

0900 hours

And then it came. A crackling voice over the radio.

"They have declared war. You are clear to engage. Godspeed."

As soon as the announcement came over the radio snipers from the southern side began firing. You could hear the battle cry of enemies of the top of the trenches getting closer. As well as the clunking noises from their singular tank trundling along. Everyone in the trenches immediately ran to their machine guns, grasped them and begin letting loose a wall of bullets. Northern soldiers were falling faster than they could run toward the guns. A rocket flew from the trenches in a plume of smoke and smashed into the side of the singular tank the enemy had, the tank immediately bursted into flames and exploded in a massive fireball. Rivers of red flowed across the battlefield, gun smoke filled the air and the ground was shaking from the overwhelming sounds of gunshots and the collisions of artillery shells with the ground.

1000 hours

Eventually the lines of northern soldiers began to thin out with very minimal casualties on the southern side.

"Our Artillery is launching a barrage at them. Once it falls silent it's your turn to go over the top and break their lines. You are already doing better than our soldiers further down the line so it is up to you to break them out of this. An armoured division will arrive soon to support you and attack aircraft are inbound to make sure your advance is as easy as possible"

As that message came through shells began smashing enemy positions and destroying what little reinforcements they had left on this front. Huge craters were being opened in the ground near enemy positions as they are ripped apart, followed by a downpour of debris. Beyond the sound of explosions, the soldiers could hear the sound of allied tank engines as they pulled up on the frontline to offer their aid. Once the artillery shells stopped hitting, four attack planes flew over and rained bullets on whatever enemies were left in the positions opposite to the soldiers. As the planes flew away, further down the front, it was apparent of the sheer hell that was rained down upon the enemies. None were left standing on the opposite side and the battlefield was a scarred wasteland, with gun smoke shrouding over the top.

Oskar and a few other southern soldiers began climbing over the top of the trenches, weapons in hand. The tanks began rolling across the makeshift bridges built over the trenches and reaching the other side of the battlefield as the soldiers all push forward into enemy territory completely unopposed. The battlefield was difficult to traverse, craters scarred the land and the ground was strewn with bodies and parts of limbs that made most southern soldiers grimace as they walked past.

As Oskar got to the enemy positions he could see beyond them that a few groups of enemies were approaching in fours.

1100 hours

"Enemies approaching!" A southern soldier shouted before being shot through the head

Gunfire erupted between the two sides, with the southerners taking cover behind the debris of the enemy positions and the enemies being left relatively out in the open. Oskar left cover and opened fire at a group of the soldiers while advancing forward to the next bit of wall that could be used as cover, perfectly controlling his recoil and killing all four of the enemy soldiers while they were distracted with his allies further away. Tank guns fired sending shell flying at a few groups of enemies sending their bodies sprawling through the air.

1200 Hours

After a while of fighting, more enemy reinforcements began to trickle in, and the southern soldiers realized they need to start using their numerical advantage to push hard before that advantage was no more. The Southern Soldiers began going heavily on the aggressive, attempting to push forward as far as possible while killing as many enemies as possible. The enemy appeared to have very little in the way of anti tank weapons and southern tanks were able to dominate the battlefield. Air support was called by the signal company, and soon enough a tiger helicopter was overhead, raining fire on the enemies and allowing for a quicker and less deadly advance for southern soldiers.

The price of a mile was now clear as allied casualties numbered in the tens, while enemy casualties numbered in the hundreds from the first few hours of war.

Further down the lines a stalemate was occurring between northern and southern soldiers, with neither side being able to push and deaths being limited by the fact both sides just altogether stopped pushing after realizing they couldn't. They just shot at each other from each end of the battlefield. While the areas that were being pushed forward, such as Oskars area, were the most bloody places on the battlefield with many meeting their end.
